Construction of the municipal swimming pool Maria Pelaez in Torrox, which was started in 2006, should be finished and open for business by October 2010.
The project stopped three years ago after problems when the construction company, Climocubierta, owned by Leonardo Chaves, brother of the former President of the Junta de Andalucia, declared bankruptcy.
Spanish red tape left a four-party team (IU, PSA, PIU, PP) spending the past three years trying to get the old contract cancelled in order to rescue the project.
The new contract has been awarded to Chirivo S.L. who beat off competition from 14 others, with a promised completion period of three and a half months. The contract is for 541,000 euros and is being financed entirely by the Council.
In addition, a study is now being undertaken to see whether it would be possible to heat the pool with biomass energy from agricultural waste rather than with an oil-fired boiler
